Executive Summary

Today’s strongest developments are not new products to buy. They are two reusable operating ideas: Meta has documented why reliable agent systems should keep orchestration thin and deterministic, while Poynter, IRE, and the Internet Archive are offering eligible newsrooms free preservation training and archiving services.

Action Queue

1. Draw the deterministic boundary in one agent workflow

Meta's thin-orchestrator workflow: discovery, user interaction, warning checks, specialist delegation, and validation

Meta replaced an over-informed general agent with a 1,300-line deterministic orchestrator and 14 domain specialists. The router classifies intent, gathers inputs, checks warnings, and sequences work; only the specialist step uses an LLM for domain reasoning. Meta reports that configuration preparation fell from three to four days of manual work to under an hour, with about two-thirds of changes landing without significant human edits.

Why it matters: The transferable lesson is architectural rather than model-specific. Routing, duplicate checks, required fields, approval gates, and validation are usually software decisions. Giving those decisions to an LLM adds failure modes without adding useful creativity.

Recommended action: Take one existing agent or automation flow and label every step deterministic or probabilistic. Move routing, permissions, validation, and confirmation to deterministic code; reserve model calls for tasks that genuinely require interpretation or generation.

AI

More context can make an agent less reliable

Meta’s first design loaded one agent with schemas, code-generation rules, routing logic, validation requirements, and patterns for more than ten data sources. In production, concepts leaked across subsystems. The replacement isolates knowledge by specialty and sequences specialists through reusable workflow templates.

This is a useful counterweight to the instinct to solve poor agent performance by enlarging prompts. Before adding context, test whether the task actually needs narrower roles, explicit state transitions, or deterministic gates.

Digital Preservation

Save the free “Today’s News for Tomorrow” program for an eligible newsroom

Poynter, Investigative Reporters and Editors, and the Internet Archive are recruiting media organizations for free digital-preservation training, professional archiving services, and sustained support. Eligible organizations include nonprofit, corporate, public, digital, college, print, and broadcast media. The next cohorts begin in January 2027; participation requires approval from an editor, director, or equivalent.

Why it matters: Local news archives routinely disappear through ownership changes, shutdowns, platform migrations, and link decay. The program pairs preservation planning with Internet Archive infrastructure rather than leaving each newsroom to invent its own system.

Recommended action: Save the application page or send it to a newsroom, campus publication, journalism program, or library contact whose digital archive is at risk. Confirm organizational approval and cohort timing before applying.

PKb Candidates

Separate routing from reasoning

For every step in an AI-assisted workflow, ask one question: is this a routing decision or a reasoning decision? Routing should normally be deterministic and auditable. Reasoning belongs in the smallest specialist context that can complete the task. This boundary limits context contamination, contains failures, and makes human approval gates easier to enforce.

Preserve interfaces, not only pages

A preservation plan should capture more than rendered web pages. It should account for canonical URLs, structured exports, media assets, metadata, link relationships, update frequency, ownership changes, and the procedure for restoring access when a publishing platform disappears.
